Types of Dental Emergencies

So what exactly constitutes a dental emergency? Here are some examples of possible dental emergencies and what you can do to mitigate the damage while you get yourself to our office for treatment:

  • Cracked, chipped, or otherwise broken tooth.
  • Abscessed tooth.
  • Extreme tooth pain or toothache.
  • A loose or knocked-out (adult) tooth.
  • Jaw pain.
  • Swelling or bleeding in the gums.
  • Painful biting or chewing.
  • Hypersensitivity to hot or cold foods.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these dental emergencies, come to our office as soon as possible. If you can’t get to us right away, there are steps you can take to mitigate dental damage in the meantime.

If there’s bleeding at the site of the injury, rinse out the mouth with warm water and apply gauze as necessary to stop the bleeding. Avoiding using tissue or cotton swabs that will leave behind pieces or residue.

If you’ve knocked out a tooth, try to locate it and put it in a bag of milk, then bring it with you to your emergency appointment.

FAQ

What counts as a dental emergency?

Common situations include ongoing tooth pain, a cracked or broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, swelling, or bleeding that doesn't stop. If you're unsure whether your situation needs urgent care, give us a call and we'll help you decide.

Can I be seen the same day?

In most cases, yes. We set aside time for urgent visits. Call ahead so we can prepare.

What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?

Keep it moist in a container of milk and bring it with you. Coming in promptly gives the best chance of saving it.

Do I need to be an existing patient?

No. We're happy to help anyone with a dental emergency. Just call or come in.

Should I go to the ER or the dentist?

For most dental issues, start with a dentist. For jaw injuries, bleeding that won't stop, or swelling that affects breathing, seek emergency medical care first.
